Early years exhibitions are crucial during a child's formative stages of development, particularly in their first five years, when they are most responsive to new experiences.
In the summer of 2025,
the Herbert’s popular Early Years exhibition returned to our studio space with Playful Planet.
Museums offer a valuable space to spark curiosity about the natural world and science, cultivating lifelong learning. These exhibitions break down barriers to cultural participation by providing accessible, sensory-rich environments where young children can explore and develop essential cognitive and motor skills.
Playful Planet (July 19 – August 31 2025) invited families with children under five to participate in an immersive exhibition inspired by the environment and life after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The walls came alive with stunning illustrations depicting fiery lava flows, crashing ocean waves, and awe-inspiring natural scenes. Children could immerse themselves in cosy pods with soothing sounds and gentle lighting, surrounded by ceiling installations of twinkling stars and distant planets.
Dedicated early years exhibitions have measurable impacts that extend beyond visitor numbers. We have seen that they attract new audiences and act as gateways for families to engage with cultural institutions. We were pleased to see that Playful Planet received exceptional feedback from visitors, with families praising the exhibition's captivating design and the excitement it sparked in their young children. Museums regularly report that early years programming increases overall family engagement and provides essential free, play-based learning opportunities during school holidays, when families often seek affordable educational activities.
